Have you ever hugged a friend, your spouse, a child or even a pet – and for a moment they are stiff, tense and you can feel the anxiety within them… yet after a moment or two, they breathe deeply and relax into your arms?
Being on both sides of those precious moments is deeply gratifying.
Those moments are not only about the physical realm, but have a great deal to do with the connection and the spiritual and emotional intimacy that exists in some relationships; the sense of love, comfort and safety.
I often consider the pleasure we bring the Lord when we lean into Him; into His arms that are safe and comforting. Our loving Creator enjoys our presence when we lean fully into Him; trusting Him and allowing Him to give us comfort.
Just as we may find comfort in the arms of a friend, how much deeper is the peace when finding our comfort in the arms of God? I like to say that He hugs us from the “inside out”. That’s a deep hug!
God promises that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us (James 4:8). We can trust Him with all of our heart (Prov. 3:5). He is our strong tower; we can run to him and find a place of comfort and safety (Prov. 18:10, 2 Cor 1:3-4). He holds our hand and watches over us. He is our hiding place (Isaiah 42:6).
Take a moment… take several moments… lean into Him.
Don’t stop leaning.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3,4 (NIV)
